Friday 10:00PM - Steampunk from Scratch
Hosted
by Vernard "Professor" Martin and Marcus Harris
The main topic is how to create a character for the world of Steampunk
using a mix of general ideas members of the audience may already have,
combined with help from the panel. We could cover such areas as;
·An
introduction to basic Victorian/early Edwardian life
·The
real inventions and sciences of the day (as a starting point for
steampunking!)
·What
sort of jobs/careers people would have
·How
they would live their daily lives and what dress codes were
followed
·How
their social standing (based on character choice) would influence the
way people interacted with them
·The
differences between European, American and other world areas world
views, etc.
From
these and questions taken from the audience, we should be able to
generate a character for anyone that wants one.
The primary purpose of the panel is not so much a
‘HOW-TO’, more a WHY?
·Why would you wear gloves as a gentleman?
·Why everyone in Europe (and most of the U.S.) wear a
waistcoat/vest?
·Why lasers COULD NOT be constructed using Victorian/Edwardian
technology and materials?
·Why open flames and hydrogen filled airships are a BAD idea!
·And so on and so forth.
Starts Saturday 10:00AM - Pandora's Box
OK,
Now you have a wonderful Steampunk Character. What are you going to do
with it?
What about a "Steampunk Murder Mystery"
As the renown Hemlock Sholmes says, "Come Watkins, the game is afoot."
The annual meeting of the American
Society of Advancement through Science, is being held in the year is
1893. The special guest is Professor Lloyd Chatin, who is going to
unveil his new invention; a power source based on crystal technology
that is small enough yet powerful enough to power anything from
industrial machines to the new ‘Flying Machine’ currently being
developed at Kittyhawk, North Carolina. But murder ensues and the
prototype device and plans are stolen. Did you perform this dastardly
deed? Or can you help solve the case before this power source falls
into the wrong hands. More detailed information will be available at
FantaSciCon.
Saturday 1:00PM - Steampunk vs. Petrolpunk
Hosted by Kyle Guthrie and Marcus Harris
Could this be the demise of Steam Power as we know it???
There is a self proclaimed prophet ranting "There is a better way".
Smaller engines for a more efficient power source which operates solely
on petrol. Why have a huge boiler and firebox to generate steam to
operate a piston in a cylinder when you can inject liquid fuel directly
into the cylinder and ignite it, internally, to move the piston? Attend
this discussion and find out the answers to these and other questions.
